Waiting in Line

At the time of booking our reservation for the ferry, we were advised to arrive two hours ahead of sailing. Well, we're here.

Open Wide

An hour and a half later and we are about to be swallowed up by our ferry, the HIGHLANDERS.

"Once I get this darn anchor thing pulled up, we can get out of here."

Leaving North Sydney Harbour

TransCanada Highway

Our crossing route over the Gulf of St. Lawrence, to Port aux Basque, Newfoundland, is an extension of the TransCanada Highway.

During our 6 hour crossing I made numerous trips from our inside viewing lounge on Deck 4, to the outside viewing promenade on Deck 7. This is a portion of a full-width wall mural--a photograph of an iceberg--I passed many times during my travels up and down the stairs.

Doing Our Own Thing

When outside on deck we are generally looking out for whales and other stuff. When not outside we pretty much lounge around on Deck 4 doing our own thing. For the guys this time is spent catching up on our journals; for the ladies it's snack time. I had set my point-and-shoot up on the sill of the window in front of us and set the timer for 10 seconds. Except for me, no one was the wiser.

Following the Horizon

I tucked myself neatly into a corner to gain shelter from the strong wind, and waited as this freighter approached, following the horizon.

Through the Porthole

Port aux Basque

Almost 6 hours of crossing time, and we are entering the channel of Port aux Basque, on the extreme tip of south-west Newfoundland, and fronting the Western end of the Cabot Strait.

Watching and Waiting

Watching and waiting, and getting prepared to lower the drawbridge.

With a few moments remaining, folks are getting prepared to dis-embark.

Our Ocean View bed and breakfast is less than ten minutes from the ferry terminal.

No Trees on Vardys Island

After getting settled in, I took the one minute stroll across the road, just to see what there is to see. One thing I see, is no trees on Vardys Island. Lots of bedrock though

Tomorrow before breakfast I take a wander down main street, just to see what there is to see. Thanks for viewing. randy
