Day 6, Lunenburg
When Sharon and I left Peggy’s Cove behind, we continued along Route 333 (the Scenic Travelway, which is the yellow highway on the map), following the east and west shorelines of Margarets Bay and Mahone Bay. Our destination was Lunenburg, the birthplace of the fishing and racing schooner the Bluenose.
Lunenburg is another community on our travels where the locals just love to chat-up the visitors. Lou, the resident “ask-me-anything-you-want-to-know” street guide person for instance, had an answer for everything; from weather forecasts, to restaurants with moderately priced menus and good food, to the cost of a horse and buggy ride through town. And there was Harry, the “no-knot-goes-untied” street vendor. Harry is a retired sailor and knots is what he knows best--I bought one of his favourites
Our visit to Lunenburg was a fun experience, but it was now time to venture on. We back-tracked along highway 333, making a couple of stops in towns we passed through on our way in. Mahone Bay, with its three 19th century church spires was our first stop, and where we lunch. And then on to Oak Island, the “treasure island” of Nova Scotia, and its money pit mystery.
