Following our visit with Mel, Sharon and I were re-united with Donna and Keith, and together we drove out to French Beach for a different point of view. The parking area for the beach was not attainable without a little bit of stress. Negotiating around, through, and over some serious-looking potholes caused us to second guess ourselves. "Not recommended for vehicle traffic", was the warning on the sign back there. But we made it through. The footing was very soggy to say the least. There was not a dry step for the first one hundred metres of this open meadow.

The fact that I could not see what was ahead of me drew me closer.

Looking For Donna

If Keith is looking for Donna up there, he is looking in all the wrong places.

Donna is down here Keith, enjoying some quiet time studying icebergs.

We all have fulfilled our separate agendas during our visit to French Beach. From here it is back to our lodgings for a rest and a freshen-up. We'll meet again for dinner, then it's off to Long Point. You'll be able to see where our journeys have taken us this day from the following map of Twillingate.

You May Have to Look Closer

From the Sleepy Noggin location on the map, Mel's place is about the thickness of two toonies further NE along the black line. Going further along the line and to the end, is French Beach. I'm not too sure how far along we hiked the red-dotted line, but most likely the length of it--it's not really a long meander, but truly a pleasant one. Our sunset cruise followed the solid black line in the opposite direction, and to the lighthouse at Long Point, on the north-west tip. And to round out the day, on our way back from the lighthouse, Sharon and I joined some locals at Sleepy Cove (see map), and enjoyed a sunset over an iceberg gathering.

While our day-light hours were coming to an end, we find ourselves at the most northern tip of the New World Island Area.

Numerous walking trails lead away from the lighthouse, offering up some wonderful views looking out over Notre Dame Bay and Iceberg Alley.

Travelling back from Long Point, Sharon noticed a gathering of people down in Sleepy Cove. We were caught up in the moment just as these folks are.

I 'm thinkin' most of these folks are not strangers to this place. Sleepy Cove is in the direct path of Iceberg Alley, so there is a constant passing of ice. And these bergs just happened to anchor themselves here for a bit before moving on.

Like everyone else I am waiting patiently for the colour to change.

For a bit of drama, I placed a neutral density filter over my lens. This is not a pink-coloured filter, but a neutral filter--usually one that gradually fades from light grey to dark grey--and its purpose is to modify the intensity of all colours of light equally, allowing no changes in hues of colour rendition. In this case it allows more of the red light spectrum to show through.

Well that's it for today's sun. That was surely one of the most thrilling sunsets I have ever been a part of. THE END Tomorrow another travel day will be upon us. We will be travelling to Bonavista, and it is at Cape Bonavista where it is believed John Cabot landed in 1497.
