A Tragic Story

Over HU's hiking years we have walked along the backside ridge of Mt. Yamnuska. The trail leads hikers to the western edge ( left side of photo) and down alongside the scree slope above tree line heading back east (left to right.)

Hikers then "boot ski" down the scree slope which are those lighter lines behind the foreground tree tops and have the sensation of descending down atop marbles. It can also be dangerous if one looses their balance.

Well apparently that is what happened this past week to one such hiker, but not a member of HU. The loose marbly rock gave way to stationary bedrock causing the hiker to falter and was killed by a falling boulder.

Leaving the trailhead parking lot on our quest for Boom Lake.

Snows are vanishing from the mountains only to reappear again in late September/mid-October.

In hopes of protecting sensitive areas such as this bog walkways are built.

The replaced walkway material is eventually helicoptered out.

Travel time on the trail was a leisurely 2 hours-ish.
I can see my reserved rock to sit down on for lunch directly ahead next to the lake.

One fishermen I spoke with as he was heading back down from the lake while managing an over-burned back pack, mentioned in passing that he had caught a cutthroat trout and a mermaid.

What did he do with them I asked. Released the fish was his response.

It would have been more appropriate to face the lake for this picture but the sun was not right, and this was the best location to set up my tripod and still give me enough time to scramble back into the photo.

After gathering up our possessions we changed seating locations and spent another 3/4 of an hour just hanging out and pretty much having fun.

On my way back down from the lake I got curious as to what these ladies were intent on watching.

Maybe there is another mermaid out there.

Further on down the trail Anne Marie and I heard birds singing within the forest.

In all my years of hiking I do not remember listening to birds singing as beautifully as they were today.

BEING SILLY

These ladies are supposed to be walking towards me for a frontal photograph but decided to be silly and walk every which way but loose.

Back down and in the parking lot area.

From here this carload has decided to stop off in Canmore, ten minutes east of Banff, and have dinner with the Three Sisters.
